ACT Cricket Over 60's

In a major boost for over 60's cricket, the ACT over 60's organising committee has secured the Australian Seniors Insurance Agency, as the naming rights sponsor for the 5th Australian Over 60 Cricket Championships to be held in Canberra in November 2010.  With continued support from corporate Australia and the involvement of Cricket Australia it is expected that over 60 cricket will continue to grow.

Australian Seniors Insurance Agency, established in 1998, is focussed on providing a range of innovative, quality and cost effective insurance solutions designed to protect and improve the well being of all Australian Seniors.

Our rigorous selection process ensures we only select insurance providers with substantial financial standing who share our vision and have the ability to deliver a range of products and services tailored to the needs of all Australian Seniors- whether they are working, pensioners, or self funded retirees.

Australian Seniors Insurance Agency provides a broad range of insurance from Car, Home and Contents to Travel Insurance.   www.seniors.com.au

History

The first game of over 60's cricket in the world was played at Hurlington Park Brighton, Victoria in January 2003. In England, veteran's cricket for players aged over 50 years has been played in several counties since mid 1980's. Over 60's cricket is now played in 14 countries and is predicted to be in played in 20 countries by 2009.

The inaugural National/Interstate over 60's carnival was held in Canberra in November 2006 at the ANU grounds. Although the initial carnival was very much an adhoc affair, teams from ACT, NSW, Tasmania and Victoria competed. Following the success of the 2006 carnival the concept really took off with 9 teams competing at the Australian over 60's Championships in in Melbourne in November 2007.

As a prelude to the 2008 Championships held again in Melbourne, an "Australian eleven" (including former test player Geoff Dymock) was selected to play a "test match" against a touring England over 60's team at Hogben-Meckiff Oval in Mentone. Former test fast bowler Ian Meckiff tossed the coin to start the game. Two ACT players, Ron Axelby and Geoff Gallagher, played for the Australian Team.
